The natural pool La Lajilla Beach also known as Costa Alegre was closed from 16th August 2017 until 28th March 2018 due to a major beach renovation. This first phase of works included improvements to the barranco which usually flows through the middle of beach when there is heavy rain. After a great transformation, here’s how it looks now.
There is now a new solarium area on the far side, improvements to the walkway, and new purple sunbeds on the beach and decking. Plans for a beach kiosk for refreshments and toilets are underway. The works are just part of a bigger project to improve the coastal path from Las Marañuelas to Anfi beach and the promenade alongside the GC500 which is now complete.
This beach now has 2 shower units which is handy after a day on the beach or to wash your feet when you’ve enjoyed an evening paddle.
If you are considering staying in the nearby hotels Bull Dorado Beach Hotel, Hotel Puerto Atlantico, Arguineguin Park or even Sunwing Arguineguin Seafront take a look at our Arguineguin accommodation page.
This video was taken during the Easter holidays, as you can see it’s gets pretty lively.
On quieter days Playa de la Lajilla has a chill out vibe to it and such a lovely place to watch the sunset or enjoy a peaceful hour before the rest of the world wakes up.
The prices for sunbed and parasol rental are 3€ each.
Sol y Sombra restaurant is still a great place to enjoy an ice cold drink or snack with a view of the whole beach. Even though their terraced area has been reduced with the works we recommend you pay a visit.
Read below for historic updates of the renovations including photos and videos.
Day One of renovations 16th August 2017
At the moment this stretch of beach until Sunwing Hotel is closed. The top coastal path is undergoing renovations at the same time, but you can still get to Patalavaca from Arguineguin if you walk along the top coastal path from the Whale’s Tail roundabout to the slope at Sunwing Hotel and then resume the beach path to Patalavaca and Anfi.
Restaurante Sol y Sombra have had to reduce their seating as they no longer have a terrace area. There was a digger machine on the first day of works near Sunwing Hotel. This first phase is expected to take 6 months.
This is what the town hall projects the area to look like after the renovations.
The second phase of renovations is set to start in 2018, but of course I will keep you updated.
February 2018 UPDATE
We were taking a nice Sunday walk past La Lajilla beach today when we realised that there were people down on the sand. We were so surprised because there hasn’t been any official announcement of the reopening from the town hall.
As we walked down the steps we greeted with this view. There have been a lot of updates since January! The rugged area on the left which has had a kind of decking installed which makes it a great solarium area, especially for those who don’t like a lot of sand. The path takes you round and it’s much more accessible that before. There are 2 shower installations and a large ramp.
The sand is a lovely orange colour and although we haven’t been in for a swim yet, the seabed is much smoother than before.
The storm drain which used to cause problems when the barranco filled during rainy season has been diverted off to the side past the hotel Dorado Beach. Over on the other side there is a big wall and railings around the edge which gives the beach a safer feel to it and looks much nicer. Solar lights have been installed on the sides of the wall too.
Again, we were surprised to see people down there on the beach as there were building materials and palettes on the floor but it looks the fence has been opened and everyone just went down to enjoy the sunshine regardless and at their own risk.
Let us know in the comments below what you think of the renovations.
Do you like it or do you prefer the older rugged look?
